Vickie McCombs: Legendary Ladies Spotlight
In 2022, I completed a portrait project called Legendary Ladies which was all about celebrating women over 40. As I’ve started a new project, This is Me, I’ve been thinking back on the sessions from my first portrait project at my studio in Cisco, TX.
Today we’re spotlighting Vickie! I knew from my first phone call with Vickie that we were a perfect match and her photoshoot was going to be incredible. I wasn’t wrong.
Vickie’s positive attitude and determination makes her so fun to be around. We also cried a few times, but that’s not a bad thing. She came to me with an idea that she wanted to showcase her running bibs and medals while still being glamorous, and I love the result!
Let’s jump into her story.
Get to Know Vickie
“I struggled with my weight at a very early age. I was bullied in school and had a very low self esteem. I was never athletic and my weight just went up and down for years. To be honest I just didn't like being me. However, seventeen years ago, my life changed big time. I lost 130lbs and started power walking 5ks, 10ks and my first half. Then by age 60, I did my first full and met a wonderful friend that encouraged me to branch out and do a triathlon, I couldn't even swim! Then onto running track at senior games and placing 7th at nationals in power walking. Since then I've run all over the US and this year ran in Rutland, England. To end this amazing year, I ran the New York City Marathon, I still have a hard time saying I am an athlete, but I am. And for the first time in my life I love being me. My 60's have been amazing and I am very excited to see what my 70's bring. None of this would have ever been possible without my amazing husband who has been there by my side for over 47 years. And my amazing friend and running partner for the last 12 years. I am grateful and very blessed. The amazing people I have met along the way have been forever epic.
Doing this photoshoot with Tyler has been a full circle for me. Thank you!”
What advice would you give your younger self?
“The only person you need to be accountable for is the girl in the mirror. Don't be afraid of what others think, it is one day at a time and one step leads to one more.”
How did your view on life change after turning 40?
“I decided to go to college.”
What is one of the most rewarding things about aging?
“For me I'm doing something I never thought I would be doing ever much less at this age. I am living my best life and I just want to grow old healthy.”
My new portrait project: This is Me, is accepting clients. This project is not age based, but is designed for women at all stages of their adult life to step into their highest self confidence. If you’re interested in learning more about the project, click here.
